Faber-Castell is CO2-neutral - Worldwide!

Emissions of ‘greenhouse’ gas been halved

The Faber-Castell group of companies is better than CO2-neutral. Overall, the emissions of this ‘greenhouse’ gas have been halved in the past three years, by means of energy-saving programmes, modern production plants, a reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels, and the use of regenerative energy sources. A special role is played by the Faber-Castell timber production in south-eastern Brazil. Over two decades ago, islands of pine trees were planted on barren sandy soil in the Brazilian savanna. It was a pioneering scheme, but over the years the forests have grown to a total size of roughly 100 sq.km (38 square miles). Millions of seedlings and saplings are planted regularly to assure sustainability. These wooded areas absorb about 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year, outweighing the company’s emissions several times over. However, the forests are not used purely for timber production. 2700 hectares (6600 acres) are set aside as natural woodland. Here numerous species of flora and fauna – some of them endangered – have found a habitat. This area alone is enough to absorb Faber-Castell’s world-wide emissions of CO2 (20,607 metric tons annually).

Sustainability report has recently been published

In 2008 the company chairman Count Anton Wolfgang von Faber-Castell was voted “eco manager of the year” by the WWF and the business magazine Capital, for his commitment to the environment. The company’s sustainability report has recently been published. It can be downloaded from www.faber-castell.de
